Storify – The Social Media News Narrative

In this social media era where everyone walks around with a smartphone in their pocket, people now have the power to report events happening around them in real time. No longer do you need to be a professional reporter to get news out to the public. You can simply tweet out a pic of the scene around you.

This becomes a huge resource when looking at breaking news, as people on the scene are the first ones to get information out to the rest of the world. Storify is an amazing resource when trying to piece together a narrative from various social media posts. Storify allows news organizations to compile social media posts together. It can draw from many social media outlets, including Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Youtube.

After the Paris attacks, Storify was a valuable tool to show users exactly what was happening as the events unfolded. This is one of the best examples of Storify’s power in breaking news situations.

This has huge implications for media users because they can participate and become part of the reporting process. It also affects the media industry in that if they are keen on integrating social media, they can access tons of information relevant to their stories just from audience members and everyday citizens.Screen Shot 2016-02-17 at 3.23.13 PM

  1. I think Storify is a perfect example of convergence. Not only it combines different social media platforms, it is also really easy to use. I believe this kind of convergence is going to be popular in the future, since some websites can’t compete with the power of social media and this is the only way to keep up.

  2. Storify is a perfect example of content convergence, its the perfect tool to collate all types of opinions, facts, data and visuals into an article. You could call this lazy journalism but if the technology is there and available to help get the job done faster and arguably better, why not.
Imagine if we still used the post office to send round information instead of emailing. This a great example to highlight the close relationship between convergence and progression.

  3. Great site, converging many social media sites. Social media has become so big continuing on from the point Wardwu made above i would class this as lazy journalism. Many large media organisations are now going to social media sites as soon as the a big story emerges in the news, going through picking out quotes and using images that have been taken by a member of the public; just one of the positives of convergence within social media. We as individuals now have the ability to become journalists and report our own stories through social networking sites.

  4. I’ve been waiting for something like this to come out. I was unaware this resource even existed. It can sometimes be exhausting going through different social media platforms to figure out whats going. This will inform the public a lot quicker and will provide various opinions and facts since the information is coming from multiple sources.
